Gas Safety in the Home

Dirtydiy advises that you should never undertake any sort of DIY involving gas.

Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on gas appliances. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register and it has to be replaced by CORGI registration.

What Can Go Wrong?

Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause the following gas safety risks:

  • Gas leaks
  • Explosions
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

What Can I Do Right?

  • Service your entire gas appliance as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Install audible carbon monoxide detector.

What To Do If You Suspect A Gas Leak?

  • Get fresh air immediately by opening all the doors and windows to ventilate the room.

  • Switch off the appliance and do not use it again until it has been checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer (go to the official website: www.gassaferegister.co.uk for further information).

  • Turn off the gas supply at the mains.

  • If you are feeling ill visit your GP or the hospital immediately and tell them that your symptoms may be related to carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to check and fix the appliance.

  • Call the National Gas Emergency number (see below).
